Day 38: Arrawarra to Kirra

Kilometres: 266km

Diesel: 0

Food: 0

Ice: 0

We made yet another beeline for the coast this morning. As we have continued further north, the humidity has increased exponentially so we were keen to rid ourselves of some of the night’s stickiness. What we found at Mullaway was a little beach in an even littler town with a huge number of surfers. We went for a walk to the far end before Chris decided he wanted to partake in the surfing. I played guitar and blogged while Chris got a few waves. While their owners surfed, a number of dogs wandered around the beach, sniffed seaweed and paid me a visit so killing time waiting for Chris was easily done.

Once we regrouped we realised that Mum and Pete’s place was only a couple of hundred kilometres away it was hard to resist. A shower, a meal cooked in a real kitchen and a proper bed awaited us. So, although we had planned to break the remainder of our trip up into two final days, we made the call to head to Kirra.

It’s like the humidity and heat doubled with every kilometre we covered. Roadworks that went for an eternity had us moving at a snail’s pace. We breathed a sigh of relief each time a truck going the other way zoomed past and pushed a breath of fresh air into the car. Slowly but surely though we made progress north and arrived in Kirra in the early afternoon.

Veruca’s first ascent has come to an end. Stay tuned for a wrap up of our days on the road and then follow along as we spend ten weeks in The Himalayas.
